It started raining about 5am accompanied by quite a bit of thunder and lightning. Nothing really threatening so it was an enjoyable storm. Only able to take a short stroll outside and met this little fellow. 📷 🐿

I joined Micro.blog in January. A lot has changed for the better since then. At first I was running into issues in the apps and backend. More recently I’m finding both to be very solid. I think @manton has really done a great job in a short time.

Although armadillos are common in Texas, today was the first time in more than 10 years of exercising on our trail that I’ve seen one there. I actually saw two different ones in different areas. I didn’t want to disturb them so the photo isn’t very good (heavily cropped). 📷
There are a lot of booths surrounding the Wat. Almost all of them selling plants, produce and cooked foods. The long tubes are bamboo in which sweet rice has been cooked over a grill. There is also live music, a pageant and a parade (among other activities including throwing water at each other). Attending Songkran is a good chance to sample Lao street food without the long flight.
A few pictures of the small but ornate Wat. We arrived early so it wasn’t crowded yet (gets packed later in the day). The celebration pretty much takes over the neighborhood and the local homeowners participate by charging $10 to park in their yards.

By tradition it was actually two weeks ago but we have a number of Wats in the area and they each pick a weekend in April to host a 3 day celebration. We made our annual visit this weekend (more photos to come).
Apple's Give Back program - more take away than giveth but Gazelle saves the day, TL;DR don’t assume Give Back is the best choice
Apple’s Give Back program has been a mixed bag for me this year, though mostly misses ➕They gave us a better price for my wife’s first gen 12.9” iPad Pro than others ➖Apple’s Give Back made a decent offer for our son’s iPad Air 2 but set the value to $0 when they received it because they said it wouldn’t power on(!?!). I told them to send it back and when it arrived it powered on fine and still had 94% charge. I complained but got no answer. Gazelle came to the rescue, said it checked out fine, and paid us. ➖Apple’s Give Back wouldn’t even make an offer on my 2013 MBP with the wonky battery. Again Gazelle came to the rescue and paid me a good price.
It seems Apple’s Give Back is tuned for newer gear and is pickier, or even shady, about the condition of items. But when Give Back pays it can be the best price. Over a longer history I’d say Gazelle accepts a wider range of gear and is reliable and has the advantage of providing funds that can be spent outside Apple’s stores.

I was not aware Drafts app had an additional layer of backups until I saw this post on the subject. Backups seemed turned on on my iPad but the last backup said “none”. If you’re interested you might want to check your settings too.

I knew our daughter’s high school freshman class was large but it wasn’t until last night I heard it was nearly 1,800 kids. She was one of about 16% to get an award and we all dutifully clapped for each student. Our hands are still sore! It was a well organized event.
Early voting started this week for municipal elections (city, county, community college). There was no line but I was happy to see a steady stream of arrivals.

Apple software support continues to impress me. I was having one issue with my new MacBook Pro so I clicked on the “call now” option and in a total elapsed time of 7 minutes I had spoken to someone who could tell me how to solve the problem and I was done.
Post-hail repair status:
✅ Roof replaced
✅ Garage door replaced
✅ Guttering replaced
✅ Screens replaced
🚨 Cosmetic damage to HVAC unit turned into physical damage by incompetent tech (I used a crowbar as a temp fix)🤬
