I think it might just storm…

The rumor of Microsoft buying GitHub has gotten pretty strong so it seems nearly a certainty to be announced tomorrow. I can’t see anything good at all coming of this.

My WWDC hardware wish list

I’ve been mulling over my hardware wishes for WWDC. The order is based on what I’d jump at the chance to buy.

  1. A soundbar version of HomePod (not I chance, I fear)
  2. A super powerful Mac Mini at least on par with a top end (non-Pro) iMac (failing that, I don't care if they update it at all)
  3. New 10" scale iPad Pro with Face recognition and general upgrades (I'm ready to hand down mine to one of the kids). Extra points for a new keyboard with an ESC key.
  4. An iMac update with large SSDs at cheaper price points and with more powerful graphics GPUs

I’ll also note updated MacBook Pros with improved keyboards though I don’t plan to buy one any time soon. I’m not convinced the currently shipping ones have a huge problem but I’d like Apple to put this grousing to bed.

When considering Bear markets, this chart/infographic from Schwab helps put things in perspective over the long term. TLDR people tend to remember the pain of bear markets out of proportion to their long term effect.

Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins gave her 2018 update to her Internet Trends report yesterday. Always info packed.

The video is 33 minutes well spent. The report itself has even more info. Always thought provoking for me. Warning: she talks fast 👏🏻

If you listen to podcasts and are a Plex user, they updated the iOS apps today to support podcast subscriptions.

The Things3 update providing full keyboard control for the iPad brings me no end of joy. It’s great having the convenience plus the consistent workflow across iPad and Mac. Desktop-Class Productivity for the iPad is no lie.

Excited part: Very happy Apple finally made Messages in iCloud available in today’s iOS update

Frustrated part: Message on my Mac (10.13.4) doesn’t have the option to enable it.

As a person who is constantly using his iPad Pro with a keyboard, today’s fantastic update to Things3 for the iPad pleases me no end

TIL @1Password added 2 factor auth support some time ago but I never saw the app listed on a site as a valid auth app so I never used it. But with the v7 release flagging sites that could use 2FA I gave it a try it and works like a champ. Much more convenient than SMS or Authy.

I’m a big fan of 1Password. Today they announced Mac v7 with a ton of improvements to usability and security. The constant improvements they make are why I don’t mind paying a subscription for this app.

Monday morning happy place. 📷

Sobering activity today: saw a list of every National Guard soldier killed since 9/11. Of course it is a long list. But I took time to look up the stories of the lives and deaths of a number of them. Time well spent to help make the sacrifices real.

Our 9 year old son and 14 year old daughter have spent the entire evening in the den. With mom and dad. Voluntarily.

Parents are confused by this unheard of behavior.

I helped my 8th grade daughter finish her end-of-year project for Business Information Management. A PowerPoint preseo for a company she created: a company building software for artists. I was happy to see how “into it” she was. She even made a video for it. I am a proud “pops”.

I used to say “I’m glad people in the real world don’t act like the ones on TV”. I no longer feel like I can say that.

One more test of my change based on the WP hack from @smokey - checking if the duplicate post was a one time MB glitch.

I put the WordPress hack from @smokey on my site. So now I wonder if this mention from WordPress will work auto-magically.

My Micro Monday is @vishae. Such a nice person and interesting posts!

So today there is news of the EFAIL announcement of PGP vulnerabilities. As always the day 0 of these notices often leaves a bit to be desired. Of particular note is, per the ProtonMail dev team, their client does not have this vulnerability and you can continue to use PGP.

After DayOne’s breach I enabled end-to-end encryption on my Journals. IFTTT won’t work with encryption on. Since it users an API for posting it certainly should be possible for IFTTT to still post. I think the only workaround is to create an unencrypted journal for IFTTT to use.
