Tonight’s learning: Explaining rotary dial phones to our 10 year old son

Played the Carcassone board game with my 10 year old son for the first time today. It’s a good game for us - works ok for 2 players and doesn’t take too long to complete.

My daughter and I did our first shift of volunteer work at the food bank. It was a good experience and she is looking forward to returning. This food bank is like a small grocery store and people are allowed to select their own food rather than receive a pre-boxed selection.

Normally I ignore new consoles because the lack of backward compatibility makes them quite limited from a value standpoint. Looks like the PS5 will be an exception. > confirming yet again that the PS5 will have backwards compatibility Sony on PS5

A little fun at the local arcade after school yesterday. We decided to give the kids a treat since our son finished his standardized tests this week and our daughter has her finals next week. Air hockey is always a favorite.

Proud of our 15 year old daughter for signing up as a volunteer at the food pantry. She starting the day after school ends.

Saw another armadillo by the exercise trail today. I guess they’ve taken up residence. 📷

Family dinner at our favorite Japanese restaurant in celebration of Mother’s Day. Simple elegant type decor.

It started raining about 5am accompanied by quite a bit of thunder and lightning. Nothing really threatening so it was an enjoyable storm. Only able to take a short stroll outside and met this little fellow. 📷 🐿

You’ll Never Walk Alone - Liverpool ⚽️ 🥅 What a game!

After a week of cloudy, rainy days a bit of blue sky on the trail this morning. But still mostly cloudy. 📷 ☁️ ☀️

Wow, very happy I stopped using these apps last year.

From one year ago today

I joined Micro.blog in January. A lot has changed for the better since then. At first I was running into issues in the apps and backend. More recently I’m finding both to be very solid. I think @manton has really done a great job in a short time.

In my silly little mind…
The majority of the flowers are saying “look at the sun over there”.
But the little group bottom left are saying “but this guy is taking our picture!”

Quote of a native Murani (African) from the 1940s. Wise still.

“‘Talk lives in a man’s head, but sometimes it is very lonely because in the heads of some men there is nothing to keep it company—and so talk goes out through the lips.’” From “West with the Night” by Beryl Markham

Although armadillos are common in Texas, today was the first time in more than 10 years of exercising on our trail that I’ve seen one there. I actually saw two different ones in different areas. I didn’t want to disturb them so the photo isn’t very good (heavily cropped). 📷

There are a lot of booths surrounding the Wat. Almost all of them selling plants, produce and cooked foods. The long tubes are bamboo in which sweet rice has been cooked over a grill. There is also live music, a pageant and a parade (among other activities including throwing water at each other). Attending Songkran is a good chance to sample Lao street food without the long flight.

A few pictures of the small but ornate Wat. We arrived early so it wasn’t crowded yet (gets packed later in the day). The celebration pretty much takes over the neighborhood and the local homeowners participate by charging $10 to park in their yards.

Happy Lao New Year (Songkran)!

By tradition it was actually two weeks ago but we have a number of Wats in the area and they each pick a weekend in April to host a 3 day celebration. We made our annual visit this weekend (more photos to come).

Apple's Give Back program - more take away than giveth but Gazelle saves the day, TL;DR don’t assume Give Back is the best choice

Apple’s Give Back program has been a mixed bag for me this year, though mostly misses ➕They gave us a better price for my wife’s first gen 12.9” iPad Pro than others ➖Apple’s Give Back made a decent offer for our son’s iPad Air 2 but set the value to $0 when they received it because they said it wouldn’t power on(!?!). I told them to send it back and when it arrived it powered on fine and still had 94% charge. I complained but got no answer. Gazelle came to the rescue, said it checked out fine, and paid us. ➖Apple’s Give Back wouldn’t even make an offer on my 2013 MBP with the wonky battery. Again Gazelle came to the rescue and paid me a good price.

It seems Apple’s Give Back is tuned for newer gear and is pickier, or even shady, about the condition of items. But when Give Back pays it can be the best price. Over a longer history I’d say Gazelle accepts a wider range of gear and is reliable and has the advantage of providing funds that can be spent outside Apple’s stores.
