Our daughter’s a high school senior and wants a laptop for school. Her gaming affinity has her in the Windows camp. She completely rejected a Chromebook so I went with a Dell Ultrabook for the lighter weight and longer battery life. It won’t arrive for a month though.

I’ve been trying to catch up with the Micro Camp sessions I missed. It’s been a bit painful because the video often stops and the only way to get past it is to reload and manually skip ahead. Is that vi.to problem?

Well, it seems Sony decided to sell me a PS5. Order placed and I’m kind of excited!🎮

I’m increasingly impressed with the battery life of our M1 MacBook Air. It has been running a network backup task for over 5 hours, on battery, and it is still at 82% capacity. 👍🏼💻

Lovely big sky this morning while running an errand.

Our first Bunraku 10 years ago today. Now I’m thirsty!🍶

But there are 2 lawn crews nearby totally spoiling the vibe.

Waking up to see some folks mighty upset 1Password is using Electron on more platforms. I am no fan of Electron but I don’t “live” in the 1Password UI, it is mainly a magical background tool for passwords and other secrets. No rebellion from me unless the UX becomes quite bad.

Oh, very nice: Things (task manager) just added markdown support. This is something I’ll use all the time.

Launched our son off to his first day of Middle School this morning. He is looking forward to everything but the long-ish bus ride (30 minutes+). This year definitely represents a step up in maturity. We’re confident he will handle the change well!

Plot thickens: After a fraud alert on my wife’s debit card 2 nights ago bogus charges were made on my debit card last night, but no fraud alert. Same Walmart. Thing is I never use the debit card and it stays at home. Very suspicious the bank was hacked.

Woke up to 4 notifications from our bank that one of our debit cards had been used for purchases at Walmart in the middle of the night. Luckily the bank was smart and blocked the purchases. We have our cards so this is likely a digital hack of a merchant. Grateful they caught it

Add me to the M1 fan club. After setting up our new M1 MB Air for my son I had him try some Steam games that cause a heavy load even on my iMac with discrete AMD 5500XT GPU. The M1 performed very well, stayed cool and quiet, and the battery drained slowly. Now I want a M1 iMac.

The new M1 MacBook Air came with a new stickler load: a set of Ted Lasso as well as silver/space gray toned Apple logo stickers (they used to be white).

We’re joining the M1 Mac club! I got a M1 MacBook Air for our 12 y/o to take to school replacing my older MB Pro. The Air is lighter with more battery life and has good performance. The school district has Chromebooks but they’re sucky and must be left at school this year.

I installed one of these smart locks on the front door today after dinner. It was a smooth process and the family has been trained. I like that it is basically invisible 😄 Level - Level Bolt - The Invisible Smart Lock.

I’m planning to put a keypad or smart lock on our front door soon. Let me know if you have a favorite that fits a standard US front door. There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews on every brand I’ve checked. Reliability is more important than Homekit.

This news prompted a great discussion w/my 12 y/o about the impact of science’s understanding of things and how it changes over time

One of our 17 y/o daughter’s friends got his drivers license yesterday and he invited her to hang out today. They spent 7 hours driving around hitting stores, fast food and making a stop at Bucees. I can remember getting out to drive on my own the first time. What a thrill! 🛻

This is discouraging. To be clear the vaccinated people weren’t in general feeling ill, they were instead being silent spreaders to the unvaccinated.

In our county Covid hospitalizations have quadrupled since the beginning of July. I could hope this might positively influence anti-vaccine behavior. But it would be a fruitless hope.

I dropped my iMac off for repair on Friday afternoon and it was ready for pick up early this morning. The independent repair shop Apple recommended seemed quite competent and they certainly worked fast. Happy to have it back. 🖥
