On the plus side we were able to remove our 52” LCD from it’s wall mount (80 pounds!) and install a 65” LCD. A bit of a trick because we only have 1” to spare on all 4 sides of the new TV. The bad news is our 6 year old A/V gear can’t handle 4K HDR. Time for a new receiver. 📺

Today’s word, integrate, brought to mind the Micro.blog community and the efforts to be welcoming and provide equality of voice. Diversity must increase but I think the opportunity is here and I appreciate the efforts to date. #mbnov

Into the woods

November 29, 2013

Black Friday’s meaning for our family is tripping the light fantastic by breaking out all the Christmas decorations. It’s a fair amount of work but we have a month to enjoy the fruit of our labors. #mbnov 🎄

I love this property of our kids’ personalities: when we asked about what they were thankful for over the end of our Thanksgiving dinner they both said “everything” - they said they couldn’t think of anything this year not to be grateful for (11 & 15 y/o). 🙏🏻

The day before Thanksgiving is a quiet one for us. Our shopping is done. Most meal prep is done on Tuesday because the items are improved by letting the seasonings ‘rest’ a day and because we brine our Turkey for 36 hours. Nothing rich about our meal but all naturally delicious.

When I setup Mb for my blog I did the simplest approach of pointing all DNS at Mb’s servers. Today I stopped procrastinating and modified DNS so only the blog went to Mb allowing me to set up subdomains. I also set it so ProtonMail can send using my custom domain w/SPF and DKIM.

We picked up our (modest) load of firewood for winter today. We got fairly well seasoned oak with a mix or sizes. Now we just need weather that’s much colder than the current 70F so we can put it to good use. #mbnov

We’re planning to replace our 12 year old TV with a larger 4K HDR model in December. I’ll need to mount it in our cabinet (custom made) so I’ve started researching an articulating mount that would keep it secure. 📺

I had my 10 year old son for company on my walk today. The clouds were unusual and the overall tone of the sky was as well. The photo is not retouched. #mbnov 📷 ⛅️

I know I’m raising my 10 year old right because whenever I play dubstep he says “you know you can turn that up if you want”. 🔊

I used to listen to Garrison Keillor’s radio show every week back in the day. I’ll never forget these segments. #mbnov

Well, it’s been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, my hometown, out there on the edge of the prairie.

I had a vaccination yesterday (not the flu one) and they weren’t lying about the side effects. My arm is quite painful and overall I feel ho hum at best. Supposedly this lasts 72 hours. At least it gave me an excuse to take a nap 💤 #mbnov

A good gift this season. Our 10 year old loves it, and suitable for adults too. How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems

a manual for taking everyday problems and using science and creative thinking to turn them into much bigger, more exciting problems

Maybe because I am living in the southwest but I don’t think I ever hear anyone use “hollow”, unless referring to a politician. They use “holler” instead. Urban Dictionary Reference. #mbnov

One year ago today I threw the switch to move from hosting my own Wordpress to having Micro.blog host my site. I miss being able to fiddle with settings but overall it definitely was the right move for me. 👍🏼

Woke up to internet issues. We were connected but almost nothing worked right or would only work for a minute and then stop working. Our router is set to use Cloudflare’s DNS over HTTPS and apparently this was down. Switched to normal DNS and all has been fine since. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It only takes a second to smile a little brighter and say a kind word to those we encounter. It can really improve someone’s day. #mbnov

I had the second part of my root canal today. It was less painful than the first but I still feel the need to wait for the pain to abate a bit more before trying to eat dinner. 🦷 🥘 #mbnov

I’ve been thinking a lot about narratives and how one can dominate on a national or international scale and suddenly fade. For a long time we had a narrative that we would build a better world. That’s all but disappeared to be replaced by polarization and hate. #mbnov

I wonder if I am something of a curmudgeon, or maybe a cynic. I am failing to come up with anything I’d describe as superb. Hmmm, I guess I equate it with “flawless” which would be wrong. I’ll say our fave Sushi restaurant is superb (very consistent and nearly flawless). 🍣

Selective: definition: the type of hearing and memory believed to exist in teenagers. #mbnov

Making a list of some things we need or want that might have Black Friday sales along with a few sites to check. So far nothing on our list is on the early BF ads. 💵

I can’t remember the last time I wore a neck tie and if I ever have to again I wonder if I’ll remember how to tie it!
